BEING FIT FOR YOU
Lisa cares for 2 young children, her husband and helps her mom. She’s overwhelmed, over stimulated and exhausted. Does this sound like you? If it does, you probably already know the detrimental effects of too little exercise, poor self-care and too much stress. But,what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do for you?
Limited time to exercise and limited” mommy-time” increases your stress. This can increase your blood pressure, fatigue, contribute to depression and decrease your immune system.
Taking even a few minutes for yourself without the kids or anyone else, no matter how daunting the logistics involved with making it happen, may be just what you need. Give yourself permission to take time for yourself to regain good feelings and get some exercise. Being fit and feeling better helps you to be a better parent. Exercise helps to increase energy, release endorphins (hormones that produce feelings of euphoria) and increase your strength and stamina. You’ll need all of your energy and strength to tolerate the rigors of family life and scale the wall to pull little Johnny down from the ceiling beams.
Capitalize on schedule breaks and find stolen moments to practice deep breathing exercises. Perform some basic stretches to relieve tight muscles. Target your chest by reaching your arms out to the side and slightly backwards. Hold for 20-30 seconds and repeat 3-5 times. Go for a short brisk walk to escape, burn calories and improve your cardiorespiratory endurance. Take the stairs whenever possible to increase your activity and get away. Engage in positive self-talk and avoid self-defeating messages which focus on a lack of energy, resources or time. A positive focus will support a healthy mind and spirit.
If you knew what you know now about your current state of physical, mental and spiritual wellness, would you hire yourself to drive your kids around, make family decisions and interact with your kids? If the answer is yes, stay fit. If your answer is anything other than a firm yes, get fit. Start today with small steps. It takes a whole healthy person to do your job.
